What is Teen Navigators?

Teen Navigators is a project-based learning group for teens ages 13-19 in High School.

Who can benefit from Teen Navigators?

Teens who could use support with executive functioning, daily living skills and interactions.  Many of these teens may have autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADD/ADHD, or other developmental delays.

What is project based learning?

One Child believes in the value of incidental learning which is learning through natural environment experiences. Each 6 week semester of Teen Navigators will feature a different project and support the group as they work to create a deliverable. Through this process teens will practice:

  • Developing and following a multi-step plan
  •  Making decisions individually and as a group
  •   Identifying needed supplies and materials
  •   Budgeting and purchasing of supplies
  •   Preparing for and practicing community interactions
  •   Practicing communication skills using the teen’s preferred communication method

How is the group structured?

Teen Navigators will consist of 4-8 teens, college mentors, and One Child Staff. Teen Navigators will have 8 meetings over the course of 6 weeks.

Semester 2024:  Giving Back Together

Teens will choose the fleece item they would like to make and the cause they would like to donate the item to;  an animal shelter, a nursing home, or location for children with sensory needs. The group will plan and make their projects at One Child, purchase their supplies at JoAnn Fabrics, visit their cause to present their item, and participate in 2 social meet ups in the community. In addition to the skills listed above, this project will encourage teens to:

  • Reflect on social causes that are important to them
  • Explore ways to give back in their communities that honor their strengths and respect their social preferences
  • Experience self-confidence
  • Discover new skills or
  • Develop ideas of ways in which they can be involved in their communities
